Dietary Properties of Pollen and Bee Bread

In Lithuania, food has been used as a therapeutic and prophylactic tool in the rich and diverse practice of folk medicine since time immemorial – says Prof. Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine. Rimantas Stukas (2002). Nutritionists from various countries emphasize that nutrition should not only protect health, but also consolidate and strengthen it, provide pleasure, be not only healthy, but also health-giving.

Nutrition is highly dependent on a person’s knowledge of health and the impact of nutrition on health. Scientific studies have proven that nutrition is the basis of health, but the majority of the population does not pay attention to it. With food, we must get not only a sufficient amount of energy-giving nutrients – proteins, fats and carbohydrates, but also biologically active substances – vitamins, minerals, bioflavonoids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, etc.

However, our diet is often insufficient, not varied, does not satisfy the need for necessary substances, which in turn can have a negative effect on health. The situation can be improved by consuming whole foods or food products containing various biologically active substances. This is where bee products can come in handy.

In dietology, pollen is used as a strengthening agent that normalizes the activity of all organs. They have the ability to preserve the tone of a healthy body and restore the strength of a weakened human body, help reduce fatigue, and improve brain activity.

Pollen is a biological stimulator of the body’s physiological processes. Small doses (1-30 g) per day are already active. Even in small doses, pollen can satisfy the body with insufficient nutrients, as its biologically active substances stimulate the absorption of nutrients from food and normalize metabolism.

To achieve dietary goals, it is more useful to use polyfloral pollen, in which the qualitative and quantitative composition of biologically active substances meets the biological needs of the body. After a few days of using pollen, appetite improves, metabolism normalizes, body mass increases, and convalescents feel an improvement in strength. Pollen is considered a good stimulant, especially for the weakened body of an elderly person.

The food industry of foreign countries processes more than 20 tons of pollen per year. The French company “Chedeber” produces various preparations from pollen, as well as dietary products for children. In Switzerland, the Russian Federation, Romania, Ukraine and elsewhere, pills, dragees, mixtures with food products, honey, sugar are made from pollen. For prophylactic or dietary purposes, pollen can be used not only in tablets and dragees, but also in mixtures with honey, propolis, royal jelly. They tone the human body, improve general well-being, reduce fatigue, strengthen muscle strength, regulate and stimulate the body’s internal processes, and prolong life. Beekeepers, who often consume honeycomb honey with bee bread, have strong health and longevity.

Gerd L. Lachler (2003) recommends using pollen with acidic dairy products, such as yogurt or sour milk. The body perfectly absorbs the lactic acid in them, which regulates the activity of the stomach and intestines. Pollen is also good to eat with cereal.

Pollen and bee bread are added to bread products, cookies, and children’s nutrition products. Dietary food products are produced in Germany, the composition of which includes pollen, bee bread, propolis and honey. The mentioned components are included in the concentrated milk.
